Know Your Rights: What to Do If You’re Facing Discrimination at Work

Facing discrimination can be overwhelming — but you’re not powerless. Federal and state laws exist to protect you from unfair treatment based on protected characteristics like race, gender, religion, age, disability, or sexual orientation.

Step 1: Identify the Discrimination

Whether it’s being passed over for a job, harassed, or paid unfairly, make sure the action relates to a protected category under laws like Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or California’s FEHA.

Step 2: Document Everything

Write down dates, names, incidents, and save emails or messages. The more evidence you gather, the stronger your case will be if you pursue legal action.

Step 3: Report Internally

Most employers have a process in place. File a formal complaint with HR or a manager. Give them a chance to investigate and address the issue.

Step 4: Seek Legal Advice

If your concerns are dismissed or retaliation occurs, contact an employment attorney. You may be able to file a claim with the EEOC or California’s DFEH.

You deserve a safe, fair, and respectful workplace. Don’t hesitate to stand up for your rights — help is available.
